Classes

We are currently offering the following classes. Each class is one hour in length, with the exception of master class, which can be extended to two hours if student interest is sufficient. Classes may be scheduled between the hours of 8am and 6pm.

Improvisation 101

Members of the Boston String Quartet will discuss improvisatory techniques for string players. Students will learn about the major/minor pentatonic and blues scales as the basis for improvisation. BSQ will interact with students through the use of call and response exercises. Individual students will be selected to improvise alongside the quartet.

Improvisation 201: Chord Scales

Students will learn about the use of chord scales in improvisatory playing and writing, including the use of the seven modes. Chord scales will be used and students will practice their improvisation in the context of a 12-bar blues. Additional soloing ideas such as rhythmic density, spacing, dynamics, and articulation will be integrated into this class as exercises.

Improvisation 301: Beats for Strings

Contemporary rhythmic techniques such as “chopping” will be discussed, and utilized as a device for beat creation in bluegrass and jazz music. Students will learn how to transmute beats from rock, R&B, and hip-hop music onto string instruments, and how these beats can be utilized as a tool for improvisation.
